Holy Spirit: Week 1 - Devotion 1

“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’”– Romans 8:15

Have you ever had someone make a promise to you that they didn’t keep? Maybe it was a boyfriend or a girlfriend that said, "We will alwaysbe together.” Or perhaps it was a friend who turned their back on you or a parent who didn’t follow through on something. It hurts, right? And when we are hurt, it makes us not want to trust again. Will this person love me, or will they just hurt me?

When people hurt us, it can also make it difficult for us to trust God, too. One of the greatest things about the Holy Spirit, whom God has sent to those who accept His Son, is that He’s a sign, a guarantee that we’re His forever. Paul says in Roman’s 8:15 that when we became followers of Jesus (and received the Holy Spirit), we were adopted by God as His child! And that adoption isn’t just for the here and now. It’s forever.

If you are in Jesus, you are God’s forever.

Think about this:

·     Read Romans 8:13-17 a couple of times slowly. Why is it hard sometimes to believe that we are God’s forever? What are some things we experience in this life that might make us doubt that we’re truly God’s treasured possessions?

·     Paul uses the word Abba, which is a reverent yet tender word, similar to “Daddy.” Have you ever let yourself get close enough to God that you feel like you can call HimDaddy? If not, what’s kept you from that?

·     What’s the hardest thing you’re facing right now? How can the fact that you’re God's, forever, help you face that issue?
