Obedience: Week 2 - Devotion 3
“This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome.” - 1 John 5:3
Have you ever had to carry a “burden?” Do you even know what that means? Alright think about it this way: when is the last time you had a school bag so full it made you feel like you would fall over? Now think of a time you had to carry something like that for a while, maybe around school for a day or even just dragging it in and out of your house. It’s difficult and makes you want to collapse.
Sometimes being obedient to the Lord can feel like that heavy bag. It can feel like life is just no fun because Jesus keeps telling us what we can't do. This isn't the way God meant us to look at it. When we love God, we do what He asks. Because we love him these commandments are not a burden. Notice it doesn't say they "don't feel burdensome." That would be the equivalent of carrying around that heavy bag; you just don't feel it.
No, God is saying that when we love God, our desire to follow His commandments is so great we want to keep His commandments. When this happens, we know that keeping His commands aren't burdens at all. It's like wearing a life vest on a boat if you can't swim. It isn't a bother, because you know it's there to keep you safe and protected.
Think about this:
Do you feel like God’s commandments sometimes are a burden?
How can you take time to better trust God and therefore His commandments?
