God's Word: Week 3 - Devotion 2

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” - Matthew 7:24-25

If you’ve ever been around a construction site where a new building was going up you may have noticed the first step is to prepare the foundation. Workers will dig down deep to lay a solid foundation of concrete reinforced with steel. Once the foundation is solid the rest of the building can be put up with confidence that the structure will be secure and not collapse.

Jesus spoke the words in today’s passage during His Sermon on the Mount. He says the person who follows His teaching and obeys what He taught is not only wise but would be able to withstand the things that may beat against them in life. Jesus wanted us to put His Word, the Bible, at the center of our lives and to make it our foundation. That means that everything about our lives should flow from the instructions God gave us in His Word.

God wants to be not just a part of our lives but the center and foundation of our lives.

So, what’s the next step?

·     Stop and think about what is at the center of your life right now. What drives you and influences the choices you make in life?

·     If you can honestly say God’s Word is the driving force in your life, then that is great. Keep doing what you’re doing. If it’s not, then ask why isn’t it?

·     Take some time to reaffirm your commitment to God. Tell Him you want to change what’s at the center of your life. Start today to read His Word and ask Him to give you a desire to read your Bible each day.
