Service: Week 2 - Devotion 3

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” - 1 Corinthians 11:1

When you were a kid, did you ever try to be someone else? Maybe you wanted to be like your favorite sports star, musician, or actor. Maybe it was just a friend or relative that you thought was cool or wanted to be like. You may have changed your clothes, your hairstyle, or even the way you talked. You just wanted to be like that person!

Read 1 Corinthians 11:1. Here Paul urges his readers to follow his example as he follows Jesus. Paul is doing his best to be like Jesus. He wants to follow Jesus so closely that you can’t tell the difference between Jesus and him.

This passage’s meaning for you is simple: live your life in such a way that people can see Jesus in it. When we talk about service, this is a practical way to imitate Jesus. Jesus loved others and gave of Himself to serve them. We should do the same.

Think about this:

  • When people look at your life, can they see Jesus in it? Do you imitate Christ so closely that people can’t tell the difference, or do you live so differently that people can’t see Jesus in you at all?

  • What can you do to imitate Christ more effectively today?
